What are the three dots on the samsung gem that are beside the earpiece?

i just got the samsung gem from alltel and i cant figure out what the three little dots beside the earpiece are for. i had a blackberry and it had the same thing, but just one dot and it was an LED light to tell me i had a text or new message. i just don't know why there are three and what they are for.|||According to the tech specs, those are the proximity and ambient light sensors.
